Nielsen Mobile have released new stats that indicate the adoption of mobile web has reached a critical mass and can now support large scale marketing efforts.
The news comes in the same week as Admob announced that, as far as they're concerned the mobile web has grown 104% over the past 12 months with the US an UK growing substantially faster.
According to Nielsen 15.6% of mobile users regularly access mobile internet from their handsets which equates to some 40 million consumers.
(All in all, 95% million US subscribers access mobile internet, only 40 million do so on a regular basis however)
The UK and Italy followed the US, with 12.9 percent and 11.9 percent respectively, of subscribers going online from a mobile device.
The Nielsen report shows that the top things to do on mobile include - visiting music portals, email access, weather reports, news/politics, search, city maps and sports.
Surprising how search feature far down on the list when key industry voices are maintaining that the evolution of search over mobile will be the single most influencing factor in its growth.
Top 5 handsets used to access internet over mobile, according to Admob, are; Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Apple featuring at no.9 which is impressive considering that the iPhone hasn't been on the market a wet weekend!

The Direct marketing association is reporting that new research conducted by them indicates that SMS is by far the most effective direct marketing channel.
A bold statement and it has been proven as 70% in the online survey confirmed that they had responded to a marketing message via mobile vs. 41% had completed surveys and a dissappointing 30% had answered an email offer.
The survey also revealed that a massive 24% of those asked have acted on a mobile offer and the remaining members of the group who had not responded claimed that they had never received a marketing message.
The study also revealed;
- 71% of those who responded to a marketing message over mobile have fixed data plans with lack of interest and cost of airtime cited as the primary reasons for non
response;
- 21% have replied to 3 or more mobile offers per month;
- Teens between 15-17 years old (19 percent) and young adults between 21-30 years old (19 percent) are twice as likely to respond to offers on their mobile devices as
individuals between 18-20 years old (seven percent);
- Top 3 industries where consumers had acted on messages: 44% food/Beverage; 21% Telecoms/mobile; 15 Beauty/personal care

Results of a new study on mobile internet browsing have found that men outnumber women 9 to 1.
According to Opera Telecom 88% of mobile web surfers worldwide are male. Additionally, the majority of consumers accessing mobile internet via Opera's mini browser application are between the ages of 18 and 27.
This disputes Return2Sender research that clearly shows there are no real gender differences when it comes to mobile use and attitudes. In fact we found that women are more inclined to download ringtones and wallpapers than their male counterparts.

Its always very well documented that we are a nation of texters... and that we love to thumb away our social relationships through text but new stats confirm that SMS really is the channel of choice when communicating with each other.
The latest report by Comreg shows that not only are there 5.4 million mobile phone subscriptions in Ireland but the number of text messages sent by mobile phone users between the period of January - March 2008 totalled 2.32 billion!!
This figure is a 12% increase on the same period last year and is a massive 86% increase from 2006.
This means that the penetration rate for mobile phone subscriptions is 121% (this is good but Italy still lead in Europe with a phenomenal 151%) and that the average users is sending on average 156 text messages per month.
Interestingly, picture messaging (MMS & video formats) has increased in penetration and popularity with 10.5 million MMS messages sent in the 3rd quarter of 2008. This is up from this time last year where 8.2 million MMS were being sent quarterly.
There's still a ways to go in terms of mass market acceptance of picture messaging.

With thanks to 3G technology and higher end phones being more accessible to consumers usage of mobile internet across Europe is experiencing massive growth according to a research report commissioned by the mobile operator body - GSM Association (GSMA).
The EU's mobile data market grew by 40% last year and to €7 Billion, with 3G users doubling to 112 million in the year to April 2008.
The GSMA attributed falling costs of 3G services, handsets and 3G enabled laptops to driving the market. Costs are perhaps the most important factor to uptake of next generation services as more and more operators introduce bundled data packages and flat rate deals the association also claim that competition from WIFI is helping to keep prices down.
Tom Phillips, chief government and regulatory affairs officer of the GSMA, has said of the rising use of mobile internet "We expect prices to continue to fall as operators further innovate around tariffs and more and more Europeans use these services as a part of their everyday lives."
According to the research, the average retail price of data roaming in the EU fell by 25 percent in the year to April 2008, andthe cost of text message roaming services dropped 18 percent in the same period. Finally, data roaming traffic in the EU grew by 75 percent in the same period.

Nike have just launched their new football campaign which will run from now until the end of June. The activity will be taking advantage of end of season matches/the champions league final but is really intended to leverage the European finals due to take place in Austria-Switzerland 7-29 June. The campaign has been titled "The next level" and have to say its awesome.
The ad is actually a 2 minute movie clip directed by Guy Ritchie that gives viewers the first person treatment by mixing on - pitch images with training sessions and the more glamourous life of a footballer.
The story is that a local soccer star's dreams come true when he is spotted by Arsene Wenger and selected to play with Arsenal. The ad shows our guy battle some of the world's best footballers.
Amsterdam - based agency 72andsunny are behind the edgy ad and it was created with the intention of portraying both the ugly and alluring aspects of playing professional football.
Agency co - founder Glenn Cole said of the ad "we were going to get you really close to all of the collective fantasies -- which is what would it be like to have Cristiano Ronaldo running at you full speed with the ball -- that would be f-ing scary. And how do we capture that? Who would be able to help us capture that in a way that doesn't become overly sentimental -- approachable but still has the hard edge depicting what life is at that level? Only a few directors did come to mind."
The movie is split into 30 - 40 second stings using various parts of the clip and higher profile slots have been chosen to play the full length version and the footage has been localised to suit areas like Latin America and give a more personal feel.
The campaign also lives online and on the Nike football official website. Surprising though that isn't a dedicated site for the campaign which would also have things like behind the scenes footage, outtakes & other extra bits.
There are plans to integrate mobile applications however and also to allow fans to sign up to an elite training program.
